Family recipes from Oaxaca, made fresh daily on South Lamar. Walk-ins welcome.
Our Story
When my grandmother came to Austin in 2005, she carried two things: her cast-iron comal and a notebook of recipes written in pencil. Maria's Kitchen started as weekend tamales sold at the SFC Farmers' Market. Fourteen years later, we opened on South Lamar and we are still cooking from that same notebook.
We make everything by hand — the tortillas, the mole, the carnitas that take fourteen hours. Nothing comes from a can, nothing from a freezer. If we run out, we run out. That is the only way we know how to do it.
Every dish made from scratch, every day, no exceptions.

What People Say
"The mole here is unlike anything else in the city. You can taste the hours that went into it. We drive 45 minutes and it is always worth it."
"My family has been coming every Sunday for three years. The tamales remind my mother of home, and that says everything."
"Unpretentious, honest, and absolutely delicious. The carnitas plate is the best I have had outside of Mexico."
